On Shady Marketing Practices: Manila Bankers Life Insurance
I received a call from an unknown number on my cellphone last Friday and this was how our conversation played out:
Manila Bankers Life Insurance (MBLI): Good afternoon ma'am Clemens, this is _____ from Manila Bankers Life Insurance and I'm calling you today to inform you that in celebration of MBLI's anniversary, you won an educational scholarship and health and wellness GCs.
Me: How did you get my number?
MBLI: You were recommended by one of our partner banks: BPI, BDO, Metrobank, RCBC, Security Bank, EastWest Bank, PNB, LandBank etc.
Me: What's this about?
MBLI: As I said, you won an educational scholarship and health and wellness GCs which you must claim today or tomorrow from our office in Makati.
Me: All I need to do is claim it? There will be no product presentations, no seminars etc?
MBLI: Yes mam, you just need to pick them up at our office today or tomorrow and bring 2 valid IDs and a bank ID with you.
Me: Sorry but I can't make it.
MBLI: Are you sure ma'am? Sayang naman ang scholarship and health and wellness GCs.
Me: I'm sure. Thanks for calling!
I made a quick search of Manila Bankers Life Insurance and was surprised to see the numerous incendiary comments and allegations of fraud.
From what I gathered, MBLI lures people with promises of an educational scholarship and other gift certificates. Once you claim your prize from their office, you will be subjected to a product presentation of their insurance products and then pressured to avail of the products. The "bank ID" adverted to in the call I received is actually a credit card or an ATM card, since the premium charges will be made via credit card or by allowing MBLI to withdraw from your savings account.
MBLI seems to be a legitimate insurance company though, and I know of someone who actually made use of the Datamex scholarship* being offered and sent her son to that computer school. I really don't think that MBLI is a fly-by-night institution, so what gives with the unsavory reputation surrounding it?
Oh I don't know, maybe it's because of their abhorrent and misleading marketing and sales practices?
First, MBLI utilizes deception to secure a potential client's attention. The modus is to use the scholarship and GCs as a bait to bring people to their office and once there, sell and sell hard the product to the captive audience.
Second, the aggressive selling of their life insurance product borders on intimidation. MBLI might argue that the final decision is still with the insured and short of pointing a gun to the insured's head, the insured is perfectly free to say no to them. That's all true of course, but what MBLI has managed to expertly exploit is the Pinoy's inherent meekness and non-confrontational nature.
Let me backtrack a bit and tell the story of when I experienced a similar modus to illustrate this all too common Pinoy trait. Once when I was going around a home depot, I was approached by a really friendly beki to fill out a form and get a pen in return. A new pen?!?! Sounds good to me! While I was filling out the form, the fabulous beki started asking me questions about my income and started talking about their ultra high tech 10-in-1 microwave oven that was on special sale that day for only Php20,000.00 from the original price of Php65,000.00. I already knew that I wasn't going to buy a pimped up oven but I let him continue talking for an extra 10 minutes just because I was too dyahe to put a stop to his sales pitch. Once I stood up and said goodbye, his supervisor made his move leading to an extra 2-3 minutes of blah-blah-blah. That's 20 minutes of my life that I will never be able to reclaim.
Based on the numerous comments against MBLI, the sales people/ insurance agents are slick operators who somehow manage to convince the insured to hand over their credit card for what they claim is a simple verification process. Then when the credit card statement arrives, hello premium charge!
I was initially dubious about these claims because aren't you supposed to sign a charge slip every time a charge is made on your credit card? I called my credit card provider to ask about this and was informed that in this instance once the card is swiped, the insurance company is able to get the card details and can set up an automatic charge on a regular basis. All that MBLI needs now to legitimize the charges is for the card holder to authorize the automatic charges and they can get that when you sign a form. So the spiel that the card will only be swiped to check or verify the balance is total BS.**
Thirdly, most Filipinos are underinsured or not covered by insurance at all, and MBLI's shady business practices only undermine the industry's effort to increase awareness on the need for life insurance. I am a big believer in life insurance and its benefits, so it pains me when I see this sort of behavior from someone in the industry drive people away and actually reinforce the wrong belief that insurance is a scam.
So if it's not a scam, would I recommend going to MBLI to claim the freebies? If you have the time, you're up for a few laughs or you want to rile up those slick salespeople and you're sure you won't be forced to avail of a product you are not interested in, then go right ahead. Otherwise, I personally think it's a waste of time. Because even if MBLI is a legitimate insurance company, I wouldn't want to deal with an entity that uses underhanded methods just to close a sale. And for the record, how much coverage does MBLI provide and how much is the premium? More importantly, what is its pay-out rate? Does it approve claims with little fuss, or will it make you jump through hoops backwards before it pays out a valid claim? I don't know about you, but I have a strong feeling that it's the latter.
I still don't believe that it's an out and out scam because you do get something in return for the money paid out, even if it is an overpriced insurance policy that you never wanted in the first place. But the manner MBLI chooses to sell its products is practically criminal, therefore it's pretty much a scam in my book. My final verdict is to steer clear of MBLI and if you do manage to find yourself in their grasp, don't let them near your credit, debit or ATM cards. Be rude if need be in order to save yourself from the headache of unwanted charges, and never ever sign something you haven't thoroughly read first.
UPDATE: I wrote about what to do after being on the receiving end of Manila Bankers Life Insurance unscrupulous practices. Read the post here.
* The Datamex scholarship was a subsidy of Php7,000 on tuition fee.
** The phonebanker I talked with actually sighed when I asked her my question so I gleaned from that that she has had a lot of questions regarding unwanted charges from insurance companies. She said that the proper procedure is to call the bank right away to report the fraudulent charge and the charge will be frozen while they investigate the matter. But if the bank is able to prove that the charge was made with your consent, like if MBLI will show that you signed the charge authorization, then the charge will be rebilled to your credit card. My suggestion is to make a formal complaint letter to your bank, attach the links with the complaints against MBLI to prove that yours is not an isolated case, file a complaint with the Insurance Commission and attach that to your letter complaint to the bank too.

Update as of November 1, 2018: Tips from Bobet of Truly Rich Makers. Thanks for this, sir!
Hotlines:

4. Ipadala sa email ang letter of cancellation.

5. Ilagay na addressee sa letter:

Kapag within 30 days, wala pong maaring gawin ang MB Life kundi icancel ang policy at ibalik ang any payment.
Comments
I've heard about MB Life before, and it turns out that they are registered with the Insurance Commission (IC). Like you, I am also a firm believer in insurance and financial wellness, hence I find it sad that there are companies like this that resort to unfair marketing and sales practices. It undermines the insurance industry, and sales and marketing practitioners as well. I feel bad for the hardworking insurance sales agents. I hope the IC would do something about this.
thesimplelivingpinoy.weebly.com
Their entire business model is very, very sleazy.
I received a call from MB this morning.
It was supposed to be a call for my mom, but she' in MNL and left her phone so I answered it.
The caller said that my mom won a product or something.. That a greenstub was picked..That will be claimed in the address that will be texted..The caller keep verifying the details..it was the name of my mom and my sister..In fairness, it was all correct..
-i told the caller that my mom was not around and that i would ask her if indeed she filled-up a form or picked a raffle...during the conversation, the caller told the things needed to claim the said product - ie ID and ATM - that's when I sensed it was a red flag. He said that it was for verification purposes and that id we bring the mastercard/atm we can have more raffle opportunities. And that there will also be product presentations.
My mistake is that I somehow slip thay have an atm. So he kept asking about my occupation and work.
He said if my mom is not around i can claim the said prize. And was also asking if i'm free for the 2pm or 3pm schedule.
To be honest, i don't have any plans going there but more so now that I read your article , and even when I called my Mom, she said it was probably a scam, and she's right.
I just found out that it was my 16 year old sister who picked the green raffle stub from a mall. She said that her friends just picked some raffle coupons/stubs and her friend even won an insurance. She alao told me that they are with one of their teachers who also picked a raffle stub.
That said, hopefully everyone should beware this types of activity. I mean, they even lure minors.
With this, i would definitely not be claiming their so called- gift certificate.
I am going to main office to file for cancellation and refund. Never read someone files complain to IC withing cooling period.
Anyone with me guys? Within this weel Aug 28-Sept 2 i will go to Makati main office.
Worst case scenario is you pay for a year's premium then ask your credit card provider to cancel any further auto-debits. I have a feeling the auto-debit is only for the first year's premium and not for the succeeding years. I know it's a bitter pill to swallow, but just think of your first year premium as a lesson learned that will never be forgotten. That way, kahit papaano, may silbi siya.
You may write a letter of cancellation to the MB Life head office within 15days cooling period. They will acknowledge the letter and return the payment as this is a legal process in accordance with the provision of Insurance Commission. I submitted request for cancellation after 5days of purchase, then the sales agent called me. I follow up the head office and now I am scheduled to return the policy to them, they will charged back my annual premium payment within 30days. Request for cancellation is legal if you follow the 15days cooling period.
Magkapareho lang yung letter of cancellation at request for cancellation.
I guess the rule of the thumb is: If it's too good to be true, then it probably is.
I have just found out your article just now...
mukhang nahypnotized ako sa pera at benefits na pwede kong ma-avail. but not looking the auto debit sa CC ko... and that was the biggest mistake na nagawa ko...
When I asked which bank referred me to them, he rattled off a list of banks that didn't include my bank, so obvious na that it wasn't my bank who gave my contact information to them; they just probably got my name from a phone directory or something.
To make a long story short, I just said that I wasn't interested in any of those prizes that they were offering and that they should just raffle it off to some needy person. When he asked if I was willing to forfeit all those "spectacular" prizes, I replied, "Most certainly" then said goodbye and hung up.
Your post was dated May 2016; it's already January 2017 and they are still doing this; jusko naman. Thank you for your post, as it will help those who are uninformed about this company's devious selling practices.
I got 5-6calls already since 2015 from MB telling me that I won vouchers and other freebies and never entertained them. Late last year, they called me and I already pissed and told them I don't have time to go to their office coz of my work schedule. I thought they will leave me but to my surprise, yesterday someone called me cp# again...thinking that it was important (coz only my family and officemates knew that number and my CC company) I answered the call. And to my surprise it was a MB agent again, I'm entertained the call and informed them that I don't want to there and get those freebies coz I know that it might be one of the modus that will lead me to purchase their stuffs and the caller read to me their scripts...along the way I accidentally told her the name of my CC and she said perfect. They told me that I can go to their office anytime today just bring my 2 valid ids and my CC. I told them that I will go to their office and they texted me that I can go early or late on the time agreed. After we talked, I searched the net and found articles regarding their schemes.
On my way home, I shared my conversations with MB agents to my officemate and I also told her that I'm planning not go their office on the time agreed. I may not go there to claim those vouchers and freebies but I'm worried, I told them that I will be bringing my 2gov't ids and CC(gave the name of CC and type of ids!)...though I haven't give them any numbers...Now, I'm paranoid what if there will be charges in the near future?! Just for me to be at peace, I called my CC company and asked them if it is possible for someone to used my CC without my knowledge? The CC agent assured that if the CC is not swipe, there will be no charges for me. The agent also told me that they never gave my CC information to anyone. Just to make sure that there will be no other charges aside from my future personal used, I asked the CC agent to resend me my SOA.
I am really paranoid but it is better to be safe than sorry!
Lessons learned: Don't give to anyone your bank/CC details to anyone. Don't give any personal informations. Be alert and cautions all the time. It's good to be friendly but don't sacrifice your security.
I hope for everyone that we will not fall to any trap / modus like this...
#ThinkCarefullyBeforeYouSwipe
same scenario happend to me kninang luchbreak buti nlng na hindi ako pwde ngleave?..parang nakukuha na loob ko eh.ang galing kc magsales talk pero apart of me still hesitant and confused kaya tinanong ko mga ofismate ko kung my alam ba sila sa company na to. buti nlng din tlga ngsearch kaagad ako sa insurance company background nila. ito convo po nmin nung agent na tumawag sa personal # ko kala ko kc bka importante kaya sinagot ko.then i found out na MBinsurance daw sila na kesyo nanalo daw ako at nakuha # ko sa bank partners nila since i am a visa/martercard holder pero hindi ko natanong kung anong bank.ayoko kc magdisclosed over the fone lalo na hindi ko kilala not unless ako mismo tumawag sa cc hotline ng bank ko.yong napanalonan ko daw worth10k+ for derma and wellness, 2-3 yrs scholarship sa partner nilang compt. school (for free, except miscellaneous expense na more or less nsa 500 lng daw, then be a member of fitness first for 1 yr.oh d ba,too good to be true.hinayaan ko na mgsalita yong agent at talagang nakinig lng ako sa lahat ng pwde nya sabihin.inunahan pa nga nya ako sa mga dapat itanong ko eh..na kesyo hindi sila scam at part daw to ng 50th golden anniversary nila.then, tinanong ako kung free ako today or tomorrow pumunta sa ofis nila kc need na nila mapull out yong mga GCs until this week lng daw. tas sinabi skin i need to bring 3 valid ids daw like company id or gov. ids and bring a copy of my visa/mastercard.we end our conversation na yes punta ako bukas 4pm tas ngtxt skin for confirmation lng daw na punta ko bukas.pero i never disclosed anything like my personal info,my cc or debit card #..So, Thank you everyone na ngshare dito kc it helps a lot para mas maging aware yong marami sa ganitong style ng panloloko and because of you guys nablocked ko na # ng tumawag skin. if ever tumawag sila skin using another #.i can handle it better na?Good day and be extra careful always!!!✋??
Guys , for me it's a scam even if they claim they are a legitimate company but the way they market their products is so deceiving ! Just be careful with these kind of people.

In my case, I followed the IC officer's advice, but I was able to cancel my policy without their intervention. But I did include the IC's email address in all my emails with the insurance company. Hehe
For those wishing to cancel their policy for whatever reason, I suggest emailing or submitting your letter directly to their main office at Ayala Ave. Best if you can do so within 15 days of signing. Minsan kasi sa branches or sa mall, they'll try to discourage you from cancelling by telling you that it's impossible, or you won't get a refund, etc.
And suggestion ko lang, when dealing with them again face to face, kalma lang! Just be clear and firm. Nasa waiver stage ka na, that's already the end of the process. You're already stressed out as it is, huwag mo na dagdagan. :)
Also wala naman po bang suspicious activities na nangyari sa account nyo since then?
Wala namang strict format yung cancellation letter, ok na siguro yung ganito:
Dear Manila Bankers Life Insurance,
I would like to cancel my policy no. xxxxxx, which I availed of last _______ through your agent in _______.
This cancellation is being done within the 30 (/60) day cooling off period.
I am looking forward to your immediate positive action on my request, otherwise, I will have no recourse but to seek legal action.
(signature)
(typewritten name)
(contact number)
cc: Insurance Commission
I don't know why people still fall for this. It is really helpful to do some research first.
I guess everyone who was able to get a credit card has an internet or somehow knows how to use computer.
Thanks for this article. It really helps when doing some research about this company.
PS
Screw Manila Bankers schemes.
tska st.peter nga himuhulugan ko pero ayaw kopa namn mamatay life insurance pa kaya for my son
You can lodge a complaint against Manila Bankers with the Insurance Commission.
Is it true?
Ito nangyari sakin. I was in farmers plaza then may lumapit na agent raffle promo daw win free trip tapos may stub na pina fill up. Name, address contact no. then signature I was a little distracted at ewan ko bat ako nag fill up usually di ako pumapansin ng ganun. Nanghingi ng id sabi ko wala tapos anything na may name ko daw so nilabas ko atm ko walla naman swipe na naganap not that i know of. Maybe nakuha nila ung account name / number nung card. Dapat ba ko kabahan? May dapat po ba akong gawin? Thanks in advance. Pls reply :)
Good luck!
Good luck!
Ano dapat kong gawin i email ko na lang yung MB Life tapos naka CC yung IC or tawagan ko na ung IC for follow up?
July 31 exactly 1:58 tumawag. One of the representative daw sabi ibabalik daw nila yung pera ang problema nga lng 30-45 days ibabalik.
As of now Sept.
Based on the comments in this thread, you can file a cancellation letter at the Manila Bankers head office within 15 days. For best results make sure your letter is received by the office and the Insurance Commission is cc'd to the letter.
I hope it works out!
A quick google search led me to this post and I'm sure that it's a scam. I'm more concerned that they identified which bank they got my details from, as well as my whole name :(
Please beware of 09175148074!!!
Reading this blog is really helpful. I just hope na nabasa ko to bago ako nakapag sign sa MB Life. It happen last December 20, 2017. Someone approached me and did the presentation. I am really willing to get an insurance para sa future but I didn't know na ganito pala ang reputation ng nakuha ko. After the presentation and approval nila nasa payment option na kami. I signed all the papers then punch in my PIN. BDO Kabayan ang ginamit kong pang transact. First attempt "Exceeds the limit" ang error then another try may error ulit. Ang sabi sakin hindi nag go through ung transaction, tumawag pa sila sa BDO to check. By reading this article I was able to send a cancellation letter via email. I don't have any papers dahil ayaw nilang ibigay kasi daw ndi nag go through ang purchase. I am very much willing na ireport to para wala na silang maloko pa.
Yup, if you're sure that your account will not be automatically debited for the premium payments, then just don't pay the quarterly premium and your policy will lapse due to non-payment. Consider yourself one of the lucky ones!
I have a feeling madami-dami na silang natatanggap na complaints re MB Life so sanay na sila mag-process ng dispute or cancellation requests ng premium payments.
Same thing happened to me about three weeks ago. Can I still claim my money if I send a letter today? From what I've read on the other comments, there's only 15-day cooling period. And I've already signed up exceeding this cooling period.
I've only read about their bad reputation today.
Ako po yung nakaraan na nadali rin ng MB LIFE, naapproved na po request for refund.. After ko magfile ng complaint sa IC..and handed a physical letter in their Ayala office.. Today i received an email that the request was approved..requirements are:
-RELEASE waiver and quitclaim (sila daw magpoprovide)
-contract policy
-Bank chargeback form
Good luck!
Btw, nakapag-file ka ba within 15 or 30 days (cooling off period) nung nabentahan ka ng policy?
Bhagz.
good day!
I need your assistance/help po.Nakapag sign po ako last Nov.17,2018 at Market2x,nahila po ako ng knilang agent.ewan ko ba at saksakan ako ng bait that day.nkapag.7k+ din na charged sa CC ko.Never sumagi sa isip ko na icheck muna company nila.
Ito na after two weeks may dumating letter skin informing me na isasara na nila office nila sa Market2x.Doon na ako napaisip na mag.research re-company nila, ito nga at uro negative nababasa ko.Nkapag email ako ng Cancellation/Refund last Jan.09 lang gawa na busy ako as in.Nakareceived ako last week ng letter na d nila i.gagrant request ko kc nga well explain nmn daw skin yung pinirmahan kong contract.
Syempre d nman ako papayag na thank you lang 7k noh ano ganun ganon lang yun..If only naging tapat agent nila na oh ma'am after 2weeks isasara na tong office nmin ha if ever mag.babayad kau or what sa ayala kayo pupunta..Nungkang mag.aavail ako ng plan nila.
Hope It help6s.

April 6, 2018 I got a call from Crisha Ortega of Manila Bankers. Same modus telling me that I have free exclusive voucher and benefits that I need to claim in their office. She sent me a text message with a reference code and required IDs (bank ID Visa/MasterCard) to bring. She said no financial obligations but to claim the said prizes personally at their office located at 10th floor unit 1005 Atlanta Center Annapolis St. Greehills San Juan. Just to end our phone conversation I said I'll try to dropby their office ( but of course I didn't)
May 5, 2018 - I received another text from the same girl. Telling me it's a Final Notice and I must claim it to avoid forfeiture.
Good thing I already made my reasearch about this company and chanced on this page.
Be wise and don't be fooled by this scammers.
Naka 5years na po ako sa MB Life Insurance may be pag-as a pa ba makuha ko ung pera. Bale 5 years lng din ung terms ko. Isa po akong OFW.

For the record, Manila Bankers Life Insurance Corporation is a 51 year old life insurance company duly licensed by the Insurance Commission with a capitalization of Php550 million pesos.
The SMS messages or telephone calls you received regarding free rewards and privileges are made through our telemarketers. Telemarketing is a legitimate method of promoting and selling products, including life insurance policies
The rewards offered by our telemarketers are in fact ready and available should the recipient of the SMS message or telephone call decides to get them from our telemarketers. You are not under any obligation to purchase any life insurance product. In fact, before any insurance product is offered to you, you will be invited to attend a product orientation to apprise you of the type of insurance product that would address your needs. In case you decide to purchase a life insurance product, you will be required to sign several documents indicating that you have been fully informed of the features of the life insurance product you want to purchase, the insurance premium you need to pay and the benefits you or your beneficiaries will receive. It is only after you have made an educated choice on the life insurance product you want to buy that you will be required to pay through your debit or credit card.
Manila Bankers Life Insurance Corporation is a legitimate insurance company. It is not a scam.
Any person who claims that Manila Bankers Life Insurance Corporation is a scam should have the necessary evidence to back up such statement. Otherwise, we shall take all necessary steps available to us under the law to protect our company's good name.
Thank you.
May possibility po ba na makakuha sila ng pera sa Bank Account ng mother ko since nakuha nila ung details nung debit card and passport even there is no signed document? I have checked my Mother's bank pero wala pa naman nadedededuct.
Thanks
