What to Do After You Get Scammed By Manila Bankers Life Insurance
Without a doubt, my post on the shady practices of Manila Bankers Life Insurance is the most popular post on my blog.
I'm still amazed that the comments keep coming in and how Manila Bankers continues to prey on innocent people who hand over their credit cards in good faith merely for verification purposes, but would later find themselves saddled with an exorbitant insurance premium.
Questions of available remedies for the duped and unwilling life insurance holders appear with scary regularity and the most popular suggestion was to submit cancellation letter with Manila Bankers within the 15/30 day cooling off period. It was also suggested that the Insurance Commission be given a copy of the cancellation letter and/or to submit a separate letter complaint to the Insurance Commission.
As it turns out, the Insurance Commission does listen and act on complaints! I don't know why I'm surprised to hear this though, maybe I've become so used to hearing about government apathy and incompetence that I've forgotten that government is also filled with silent workers that toil without glory or accolade in ensuring that the system runs smoothly while protecting the interests of its citizens. It just so happens that bad news is broadcasted on loudspeaker and is so much sexier to report on, thus, the resulting negative image.
Anyhoo, this article about the show cause order issued to Caritas Health Shield may sound eerily familiar:
The magic number seems to be 117 because generally the Insurance Commission would endorse the complaints received to the Association of Health Maintenance Organizations of the Philippines, Inc. (AHMOPI), as a form of self-policing or cleaning their own ranks. However, the Insurance Commission was impelled to take action after it received 117 similar complaints on the fraudulent swiping and charging of credit and debit cards. Hence the directive for Caritas Health Shield to answer the allegations of fraud and misrepresentation against it,
The complainants claimed they had no intention of purchasing HMO products from Caritas Health Shield, and requested cancellation of their contracts and the return of their premiums that were charged on their credit and debit cards.“In the show cause order issued by the IC, Caritas Health Shield was ordered to cease and desist from engaging in the activity complained of pending the conduct of an investigation,” the IC stated.
For those who have been similarly duped by Manila Bankers, the trick seems to be to work together and submit complaints en masse to make a statement that the Insurance Commission cannot ignore. I don't think that number of complaints has to reach 117 too, but something equally numerous should do the trick.
Nonetheless, it's probably not enough to submit a letter complaint, because the Insurance Commission has a specific format and process for the filing of a formal complaint. So if you really want to put an end to these deceptive practices, better haul your ass over to United Nations and lodge a formal complaint against Manila Bankers.
As always, the best thing to do is to ignore their sales pitch and not to hand over your credit or debit card. But if the damage has already been done, you can still file a cancellation letter within 15/30 days after signing the insurance contract and be sure to CC the Insurance Commission to the letter. However, for maximum results, although it will take some effort on your part, lodge a formal complaint with the Insurance Commission as well.
Good luck everyone!

Update as of November 1, 2018: Tips from Bobet of Truly Rich Makers. Thanks for this, sir!
Hotlines:
+63998-9641223
+63917-5424079
+632810-1051 Loc. 205
4. Ipadala sa email ang letter of cancellation.
Email: support@mblife.com.ph
5. Ilagay na addressee sa letter:
— Underwriting Department
Manila Bankers Life
cc:
The Commissioner
Insurance Commission
Underwriting Department
MB Life Insurance Corp.

Kapag within 30 days, wala pong maaring gawin ang MB Life kundi icancel ang policy at ibalik ang any payment.

I'm also annoyed at the ladies who hang out along Kalaw St. in Manila and pounce on seamen or guys who look like they could be seamen. I think they push personal loans or medical exams for seamen. One time, this lady was really pestering a young guy who was on the phone. She was grabbing his sleeve and was in his face saying "May kausap ka ba talaga ha?". Grrrr..... I so wanted to punch her.
I did a Google search just to check that they were a legit company. And found their website and the address of the branch office I was in. I forgot to add "scam" to the search term. Ugh. I just feel so stupid.
Don't feel bad. The Manila Bankers people are really trained to push and push their product hard. They probably smelled your moment of weakness and pounced on it.
Please get your facts straight. Don't spread fake news :)
Anyway, after I told her it would probably be better if I'd be the one to answer her questions since my mother is over 80 years of age already, she immediately gave me the "good news" that their rewards and freebies were transferable to me, and that as far as that vacation tour prize is concerned, I could even get more raffle entries if I present them a card or something from any preferred bank partner of theirs. At this point of our conversation the audio was a bit inaudible so I wasn't so sure if I heard her right but i just assumed she was talking about credit and debit cards. In any case, she assured me all these were free, sensing my apprehension about the whole deal perhaps, and added that I only need to show up at their office and present two valid ids for verification.
Now, though inside I was confident that they were never ever fooling me, I think i can understand from our conversation how and why anyone would get duped by their shady transactions. Sadly, they really are good at what they do, almost as if they have some hidden hypnotic powers drawing you helplessly in. They could even sound friendly and engaging, though from my experience I got a little annoyed when she started asking all these personal questions. They're really good that even now I still look back at that call and try to assure myself that I didn't fall for them and I never gave away any compromising personal details. At least I'm not stepping into their office anytime soon and that's the real good news.
Good luck!
I'm sorry but I don't provide formal legal assistance to Manila Bankers victims. Please refer to the past comments for possible remedies if you feel like you have been victimized by Manila Bankers Life Insurance.
Maybe you can also ask Mr Juan why their company practice is to make people believe that their credit/debit cards will only be swiped for verification purposes, but then the premium will already be charged na pala. Worse, the mbl agents will insist that there's no way to reverse the charges. It's plain and simple swindling.
The cooling off period seems to be an industry practice, but I'm not sure if there's an actual law in place mandating it.
It's best to check the policy itself if it provides for a cooling off period.
Then wala pang 1 month tinawagan ko sila. Sabi hnd ko pa daw pwedi icancel, after 1year pa daw. They said after 6 months pa na man daw ako magbibigay ulit. So i just let go. But now, gusto ko na po tlgang ihinto to.
I hate myself for falling on this, like for real.
And also, thanks for this thread. I felt better just by talking about this to you guys.
Thank you po ulit ms. JILLSABS
Good luck!
You're welcome! And don't beat yourself up over falling for their dirty tactics, they're trained professionals who are used to manipulating and deceiving people.
Pero hindi mo na makukuha yung binayad mo sa insurance coverage mo for the last year, kasi nagamit na yon (i.e. meron kang insurance protection for the last 12 months).
There's no specific format for the cancellation letter. As long as you indicate the details (i.e. your name, plan number, when you got it etc.) and what you want to happen (i.e. cancel the policy within the cool-off period), then that should be ok. Also, be sure to copy furnish the Insurance Commission to your letter.
Good luck!
What should I do?
Debit card o ATM card ba yung na-swipe?
If you can manage to empty out your debit card, I suggest you do so. This is so that there will be no more MBLI debits done while they're processing your refund. From what I've been reading, MBLI are outright scammers and their word doesn't mean anything. So even if they promise that your card will only be swiped for verification, or your card won't be charged while your refund request is being processed, don't believe them.

Let's all be careful na lang!
From the comments re Manila Bankers, I gathered that the main branch in Ayala is efficient in processing valid claims. The problem lies with the agents who mislead and even flat out lie to their victims re the payment scheme/ nature of product purchased/ possibility of cancelling the contract etc. So I would think that your premium payout from the main branch should go without a hitch. Good luck!

Pagkauwi ko po ng bahay, I realized na I don't want the insurance that was given to me so I researched how to cancel kasi sabi nung nag assist sa akin na bawal na daw icancel, then yun po, thankfully I came across your post.
And yun nga po, after reading your post and backreading the comments, agad agad po akong nag send ng email sa MBLife and nag cc din po ako Insurance Commission.
Yung first is idiscuss ko daw muna sa Insurance yung cancellation and then second po, ipablock ko na lng daw yung card ko and then request for a replacement.
And then yun, pinili ko yung second option and pinablock ko yung account ko just to be sure. But tanong ko lng, if ever ma approve yung cancellation ko, pwede pa rin po ba irefund sa akin yung pera kahit iba na yung bank account ko? Thanks.

Just like the others...Me too..I almost fell with mb life tactics haha! ryan is Also the name of the recruiter he told me to help him by accepting his offer to reach his quota... damn! I was so stupid..lols! he got me! well i juz wanna help him so i did ...
So he brought me to their designated office at the mall checked my id and card balance and attended by a lady then,
I let her to discuss their product and services since they told me that they would just wannA let me know about mb life ins. So i Cud share it with my friends.. At first, asked some personal info but it was funny that while discussing their services the next lines was about if i ever had a bf or how beautiful my eyebrows was and so on. ... hahaha! It was fun to realize that was the way on how she wanted me by making some praises
on my looks asking personal info in the middle of discussion of their services offered ...
That 'promised' 45 minutes became almost 1hour so i told her i had to go...suddenly, The next thing i knew i was filling up my form and when i almost done, another one came... Well ..unfortunately Filling up form is not my 'forte' it makes me get annoy easily.. so thats the time i refused to continue and told her i did not want it anymore hehe
I almost hipnotized but thanks to their numerous forms i got out of it!
the lady kept yelling and saying 'inexplained ko sayo before blah blah!.. But sorry i wasted my time so much .
.
Funny d daw sapilitan pero bawal nko tumanggi kasi naka filled up nko sa form with number on it . So???haha..
at that time my friend called me so ihad a chance to leave .. Hehe
Thank God i managed to get out of that place...
Never na never na tlga mauulit huhu
Nope, dapat walang mababawas sa ATM card mo
Hindi mo na mababawi yung binayad mo kasi within 15 days from signing lang yung cooling off period na pwede mo pang ipacancel ang policy at maibabalik ang bayad.
Atsaka, insured ka rin for the past 3 years so hindi nasayang ang binayad mo.
Please read the post.

Kapag within 30 days, wala pong maaring gawin ang MB Life kundi icancel ang policy at ibalik ang any payment.
For process palang pag nagbigay ako ng id. Help me po please.

Either is ok, ang importante is naka-CC yung Insurance Commission sa letter cancellation.
Ganyan din nangyari sakin sa AliMall Cubao, sabi sakin wala daw sila iooffer, ippromote lang daw kung ano at sino yung Manila Bankers, tapos papasagutan ng client survey, then next thing i knew is pinapafill up na ako ng policy at pinapapirma na ako ng kung ano ano at tuloy tuloy akong pinaswipe ng credit card ko worth 21k annual payment daw yun.
Question,
As long as wala kang pinirmahan at hindi mo ibinigay ang ATM o credit card details mo, walang habol sa iyo ang Manila Bankers at wala kayong kontrata.
nakakastress na feeling ko sobrang bobo ko but then again i was at my weakest nakita nila siguro na pagod na ko that day so hindi gumagana maxado braincells ko, fast forward to today, i just got the cheque refund money from mblife san pablo thank god natapos na rin nakakatrauma xa promise so.. first i followed the steps from here and insurance commission helped a lot, i also send screenshots convo of mblife and me to insurance commision as well, kasi madami pang sinasabi mblife kesyo pumunta sa makati for meeting meeting, sabi ko sakanila bakit may meeting meeting pa eh d naman nakasulat sa process flow nila yun, may process flow sila sa mismong website nila for freelook period, tsaka sobrang hassle din gawa nang probinsya pa ko. so anyway sinumbong ko rin yun sa insurance commision with their processflow screenshot from their own website then the way they handle my freelook period refund request, they kept insisting for a meeting and not following their own process flow for freelook refund, feeling ko papahirapan pa nila ako. buti na lang si insurance commision inasikaso agad sinulatan nila ang mblife demanding them to refund my money asap, ang alam ko meron din ilan pang mga tao na nag apply for refund. it took 2 months for me to get my money back kasi xempre dec and january madami holiday na wala work. tapos the time it took for the physical letters to arrive at both designated places insurance commission at mblife company building.ayun. pinush ko lang talaga karapatan ko about freelook period, highlight ko mga mismatched information dun sa mismong papel nang insurance na binigay sakin, basta dami mga nakita ko na medyo kaduda duda dun sa policy.. anyways... never again, lesson learned.
The same thing happened to me, just last night.
Naglalakad kame sa lower ground ng SM north looking for a stuffed toy na ireregalo sakapatid ko apparently may agent na lumapit saken saying na Anniversary ng MBLife and that nanalo ako ng mga free gifts nila which can be claimed sa office nila, sinabihan pa ako na 30 minutes lang ang needed para introduce yung product, apparently it turned out to be almost 2 hours,
Pinag fill up nila ako para icheck daw ang eligibility pero it turned out to be the application form, I tried to say no pero ayaw talaga nila akong pakawalan,
I was so dumb na napa oo nalang ako at na charge nila ung credit card ko ng 14540 para makauwi na...
I already submitted a request for cancellation through Email,
I even spoke to my bank about the charge kaso ang sabi nila I have to pay for it or request for the merchant to cancel the payment para ma reverse kaso ang due date ko is this upcoming March 30 na...
